First Sub Day

Hey friends. Sooo…first sub day of the year is tomorrow. Does that stress anyone else out?? I feel like a mama duck leaving her ducklings at the pond and hoping they know how to swim! Eek!!

One thing that always helps is my Sub Binder. You can read all about that by clicking on the picture!

I just wanted to share the activities I am leaving in case you can use them! I know that sub plans are NOT fun and now you have a few activities for when that day comes!
In Math, we are having SOO much fun exploring shapes. They are getting really good at using pattern blocks to create other shapes. Today they used them to create a hexagon in multiple ways…I’m so proud of how they did!! BUT…some of my kiddos still don’t get it completely, and I have several ELLs that could use some vocabulary practice. They will be working on this little Shape Book tomorrow with the sub. It’s super easy and not fancy, but it will be good practice and won’t require too much of the sub! It’s 2/page so you can save on copies.

They will use our anchor chart to spell the shape names. I am seriously harping on RHOMBUS. I have said “Mathematicians don’t say diamond, they say rhombus” about 450 times this week. They will also be playing Grab and Graph.
In Reading, they will be reading Otis! We just started our fiction unit so this should be the perfect book to practice story elements. They will be drawing and writing all about the story elements. You can use this page for any fiction book.

And finally they will be writing about being a superhero. Our Writer’s Workshop curriculum is pretty packed so I don’t get a lot of time to do fun prompts. Sub days are the perfect day for that and they really do love them!
So there ya have it! They also will be doing Reader’s Workshop during the day and a few other simple things. I always tell the sub to do a read-aloud if she needs a time filler. I hope these activities help you for a sub or any other day. 🙂
If you would like these activities, just click the picture :).
Have you checked out the Educents bundle yet? If you haven’t, be sure to stop by! You only have a few days left to grab these fabulous products from some of my closest friends!
