Creating Published Authors

This post is sponsored by Studentreasures. That means I get a small compensation for posting, BUT I truly believe in this product and would never advertise something I wouldn’t use myself.

I have a confession. Every single day I tell my students they are writers. I say it during our mini-lessons and during small groups. I pretty much say it all day long. But when our students look at our classroom library, what authors do they see? Mo Willems, Bob Shea and Jacqueline Woodson. Not Taylor or Liam or Aadvey. Their names are missing from our library.

That’s why I’m so excited about the work Studentreasures is doing. They take student work and turn it into BOOKS. Books students can read during workshop time and that we can add to the school library. Books students can share with their parents before bed and read to their younger siblings.

I wanted to share the process with you so you can see how easy it is! Once you sign up (you can use my link here) they will send your package. It doesn’t take long at all and it’s super organized! Signing up is totally FREE!

Studentreasures will send you all the blank pages you need! I chose the landscape primary lined version. You get a cover page, dedication page, 66 writing pages and illustration pages, and an about the author page.

Not sure what to have students write about? I suggest integrating it into your current plans. Whatever writing unit you are in right now is great! If you’re still not sure, I came up with a few ideas.

Before you send the materials back to Studentreasures, you’ll want to make sure to include parents. They make it super easy! You’ll send home these order forms to every parent. It’s totally ok if parents don’t want to participate…they just ask that everyone sends back a “no” form.

After you send your book off, it takes about 20 business days for it to be published. You’ll select a publishing date when you order your kit and everything is due the week before. They send a label so it’s super easy to ship back!

The fun part, though, is after it’s published! Your class will get a FREE copy of the book to keep forever. Students will absolutely love keeping it in their book boxes to read during independent reading time! If you have strong readers in your class, it would be SO fun to have them read their pages to a younger grade.

A few weeks later you’ll get a box with your FREE class book and any books that parents ordered for their child to keep!

It truly is super easy and such a great idea. Our students NEED to know how important their writing is. One day soon they will be our journalists, bloggers, influencers and politicians. Let’s make sure they know how special their words are!
